About Our Calculator
This calculator provides an estimate of potential energy savings when upgrading to a more efficient HVAC system. The calculation considers your current system's age and efficiency, the size of your home, and your typical energy usage.
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a measure of cooling efficiency for air conditioners and heat pumps. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the system. Current minimum standards require new residential systems to have a SEER rating of at least 14 in most states.
Understanding SEER Ratings
The SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how efficiently your air conditioning or heat pump system will operate throughout the cooling season.
- Low Efficiency: 8-13 SEER (older systems, no longer legally sold)
- Standard Efficiency: 14-16 SEER
- High Efficiency: 17-21 SEER
- Ultra-High Efficiency: 22+ SEER
For every 1-point increase in SEER rating when replacing an old system, you can expect approximately 5-8% in energy savings.
